Christine & Patrick's Wedding

How We Met

Christine’s Story

Patrick and I met during the summer of 2006 while working as counselors at Riverside Lutheran Bible Camp in Story City, Iowa. It was my first year working at camp and I didn't know any of the other counselors. Pat had worked there the previous summer and he'd gone there as a camper in the past, so he knew the place and most of the people already. So, I figured he probably wouldn't notice me.

The first time we had a conversation together was when Pat talked to me about flying. I had just gotten my private pilot certificate at the beginning of the summer, while Pat had never even been in an airplane before! He told me that he was planning to go skydiving later that summer and wanted to know if I would take him flying some weekend so his first experience in an airplane wouldn't be jumping out of one. So one of the first weekends of the summer I took him flying. I don't remember anything specific that we talked about that weekend, but it was a good experience and I decided that we should be friends.

Now, counselors at this camp are not allowed to date during the summer, so Pat and I officially became a couple on the last day of camp. We also just happened to hang out a lot during the summer. And we may have gone to dinner and a movie a few times. But just as friends. Officially.

Pat’s Story

It was my second year working as a counselor at Riverside.

I was planning on going skydiving with my buddy Will a few weeks after camp started, but had never been in an airplane before. I wasn't totally sold on the idea of going up in a plane for the first time and planning on not landing in the plane.

Fortunately for me, there was a cute counselor at camp who also happened to be a pilot. I talked her into taking me up for a ride one of the first weekends of the summer. We drove to the airport in Omaha together and, in addition to the time we spent in the air, we had the whole six hour round trip car ride to get to know each other.

The next weekend, I felt it was only right for me to take Christine out for dinner, to repay her for the plane ride of course.

A week later, I was getting ready to drive to Iowa City to go skydiving with Will when I realized I had a flat tire. It was about that time that Christine walked by and the flat tire and the missed skydiving appointment didn't seem like a very big deal anymore.

I'm a little fuzzy on the details on when we officially became a couple, or even whose idea it was, but by the end of the summer, we both knew that we wanted to spend a lot more time together.

Happy Birthday Christine!
